A local court in Okinawa has ruled the Japanese government pay near 6 million U.S. dollars in damages to residents around a U.S. air base over aircraft noises. The controversial U.S. Futenma airbase is located in Japan's southernmost Okinawa Prefecture. About 2200 plaintiffs who live around the Marine Corps Air Station Futenma in Ginowan city, put the case forward. They say they suffer from mental distress as aircraft noise from the base disrupts their sleep and daily lives. They also worried about aircraft crashes. Though the damages will be rewarded, residents are still suffering from the noise everyday. But resentment against the airbase goes deeper than noisy planes.
